Sullivan County
is one of New York State's birdiest counties, home to the
famous Bashakill Wildlife Management Area and the Mongaup
Valley Bald Eagle area, two sites designated by New York
State as Bird Conservation Areas. It is possible for a person
to find over 100 different species
of birds in one May day at the Bashakill. One can also
find over 200
species of birds in Sullivan County in a year; both of
these feats were accomplished in 2002. A total of over 280
species of birds have been recorded in the county.

Wood Duck Counts
In 1995 we did our first fall count of Wood Ducks as they came
into the Bashakill for the night, recording 2050 birds. Because
visibility (and numbers of ducks) are greatly affected by weather
conditions, we do the count twice each fall, once in late September
and again in early October. Our highest count was on October 8,
1997 when 2397 were counted. More than 2000 have been tallied in
only three years: 1995, 1997, and 2006. The average count is over
1600 Wood Ducks. Stop in during the evening for either
count this fall - bring binoculars and a chair if
you like!
